Oh, Hong Kong! Many purists critisize it as a huge shopping market and nothing else. Sure there are plenty of shops here. Hate as I do shopping I did some myself.
I was looking for digital camera in Mong Kok (whatever you think at your perverse hearing about this name it actually means Busy Corner in Cantonese).
Luckily the Consumer Reports have just published their BIGGEST DIGITAL ISSUE EVER -- and it was sent to me here. Their recommendations manly coinside with those of my advisers to whom I am still very thankful.
This field is well represented here, but I discovered that Hong Kong prices are about 30% more than in New York City. Though my old camera was showing some strange signs, I did develope many films -- and everything is fine. So for now I I have delayed this purchase.
So perhaps the fame of Hong Kong as a shopper's paradise is doubtfully deserved. But I like Hong Kong for many other reasons. In spite of being heavily populated it is very picturesque for both natural and urban landscapes. And especially I am impressed with its efficiency. In the tiny narrow area double-decker busses and trams move almost touching one another, but everything moves on time. Surface roads, viaducs, subways and elevated rails crisscross one another numerous times. However all this runs smoothly. It is clean, and every tiny parcel of land is turned into a miniature park. There are high quality museums and the cultural life in general is rather rich.
But unfortunately it is time for me to move further. By Chrismas time I hope to be in Hanoi.
Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore -- just one month for a country and more than half a year passed! And Indonesia, East Timor, Brunei, Phillipines? I do not even mention their neighbors. So, please , do not ask me when I go home.
What else do you want me to tell you?
Here, in Hong Kong, the computers are readily available at the public libraries. How it will be in some other countries I do not know. somebody says there are no internet cafes in Myanmar at all.
So while it is possible I send you my best wishes to the upcoming big holidays season.
Happy New Year to everybody!!!
Your Leo
